Gathering in the piazza

The group meets outside once the day's visitors and the ticket queues have gone, the basilica's floodlit facade the only thing left lit in the square.

The doors open for you

A custodian lets the group in through doors that are shut to the public for the day, the church otherwise dark and empty around you.

A dark interior, at first

The gold overhead is barely visible when you first step inside — the guide brings the lighting up section by section rather than all at once.

The domes, one at a time

Guests describe St Mark's domes lighting one after another, the mosaic figures and gold ground resolving overhead rather than in one sweep.

The Pala d'Oro, on two of the three tours

The VIP and LivTours evenings stop at the gold and enamel altarpiece behind the high altar; the hero tour doesn't include this stop.

Down into the crypt

The evening ends below the altar, in the crypt that held St Mark's relics from 1094 until 1835, before the VIP tour continues on to the Doge's Palace.
